Wood Edging
Another popular option in edging is wood edging. I've
seen it used with great and little success. One of the
best places to use wood edging is along straight runs in
a landscaping bed. The picture below shows the edge
of a bed and driveway, and wood edging is used.
As you can see, the wood does a good job of
keeping the stone in place, especially when there is a
rise next to the edging. Wood is also inexpensive and
relatively easy to install. You can buy landscaping
timbers that are a semiround and are intended for
edging. Normal treated lumber will work just as well if
you want something thinner like the picture above.
However, I must stress that you use treated lumber.
It may be more expensive initially, but it will last
many times longer.
However there are a few drawbacks to wood edging:

  • Won't last as long as plastic
  • Requires power tools to install
  • Can't be used on complex curves
